Captain Sam Marzban serves as the Commander of the Investigative and Forensic Services Division. In his capacity, he oversees the Auto Theft Unit, Cold Case Unit, Computer Crimes Unit, Chaplains Corps, Fire Investigations Unit, Forensic Science Laboratory, Friend of the Court Enforcement Unit, Fugitive Apprehension Team (FAT), Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET), Special Investigations Unit (SIU), and Warrants Unit.
Captain Marzban began his law enforcement career in 2004 as a Deputy with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. His career progressed with promotions to Sergeant in 2011, Lieutenant in 2021, and Captain in 2025.
Captain Marzban has worked in Corrections, Road Patrol, and Investigations. He was also a member of the Sheriff’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team. He previously supervised the 416 Traffic Unit and Alcohol Enforcement (AE) Unit and was among the agencies’ first Drug Recognition Experts (DREs).
Previously, Captain Marzban was assigned to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) where he investigated complex crimes, homicides, officer involved shootings, in-custody deaths, internal affairs and supervised the Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit. He conducted numerous investigations which have led to successful prosecutions of serious and high-profile crimes. He is a certified Force Science Analyst, and completed the Advanced Force Science Specialist Course, which is an intensive study of human performance in high-stress, rapidly unfolding force encounters.
Captain Marzban was also the Commander of the City of Pontiac Detective Bureau, where he managed nearly 5,000 criminal investigations annually. He was instrumental in implementing a data-driven approach to reduce gun violence utilizing Crime Gun Intelligence, to effectively break retaliatory cycles of violence, and significantly lower violent crime rates. Under his command, the Detective Bureau achieved a 92% clearance rate in homicide investigations in 2024, well above the national average.
Captain Marzban has received numerous awards and recognitions, including multiple Professional Excellence Citations, Citations for Meritorious Service, Distinguished Unit Citations, Sheriff’s Special Commendation, and Military Service Bar. In 2017, he was recognized by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson as one of Oakland County’s “Elite 40 Under 40.”
Captain Marzban earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan-Dearborn and graduated cum laude with a Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University Law School. He is a licensed attorney, admitted to practice in the State of Michigan. He is also a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff & Command.
