Project Planning and Implementation: Rain Gardens

I intend to design and install my rain garden project myself. What are the requirements?
What types of plants will I need to use in my rain garden?
Where can I find native plants?
What is a soil infiltration test?
If my soil infiltration test fails for a rain garden, can I still install a rain garden through the program?
Can I make my rain garden bigger than the calculated size?
Can I build a rain garden to mitigate drainage coming from my neighbor’s property?
What do I do with the dirt I’m digging out?

Rebates

What do I need to do after my project has been installed?
How much will my rebate be?
Do I need to provide receipts?
What purchases are eligible to submit?
For a do-it-yourself project, can I submit receipts for my time and labor?
Does the program cover plants or trees that don’t survive?
Can I purchase materials before I’m accepted into the program?

Examples of ineligible projects

  • A project that has been installed prior to RainSmart Rebates approval.
  • A project that does not meet our guidelines:
    • Rain gardens must contain at least 75% native plants
    • Rain barrels must hold at least 50 gallons 
    • Trees must be at least 5 feet tall and on the Eligible Tree List 
  • A project submitted by someone other than the homeowner.
  • A project on commercial or public property.
