Randolph Street Drain Serenity Point and Riverbank Stabilization Project
The Randolph Street project will provide necessary maintenance to the spillway area of the Randolph Street Drain east of Hutton Street in Downtown Northville.
-
Funding: A community grant was received through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to fund this project.
-
Managed by: WRC in coordination with the City of Northville, which will shortly be making improvements to Ford Field Park.
-
Construction begins: Winter of 2025 The earliest work will involve tree removals within the Randolph Street Drain spillway. Hutton Street will be closed between Rayson Street and Dunlap Street for approximately six weeks, and traffic will be detoured to Center Street.
Project Goals
- Deter ongoing erosion of the outfall to stabilize the river embankment.
- Secure the structural security of Hutton Street that abuts the headwall.
- Reduce sediments from the outfall discharging into the Rouge River.
- Improve the water quality of an “Area of Concern” flagged by the EPA impacting the Great Lakes.
- Introduce new vegetation and natural riprap along the riparian edges to improve aquatic habitat and nesting areas while providing a more natural setting in the park area where the drain has greatly degraded.
- Improve the scenic viewing point overlooking the historic Ford Mill Pond spillway.
- Address a safety hazard and create a serene viewing point, benefiting the visitors who are attracted to this popular regional destination.
